Bolts are one of the necessary fasteners used in industries for their workpieces and components. The primary role of this threaded fastener is to keep two or more hardware parts together in a particular position. The build of a bolt is straightforward, but it has several components that must be understood clearly and there are different types of bolting tools used to maintain the integrity amongst these fasteners.

First let us understand the four components of a bolt are:


  1. Head

The topmost of the bolt is the head, which resembles and provides a surface area for torque tools or hydraulic bolt tensioner that you can get a grip on. The head is one of the essential parts to loosen or tighten a bolt. A specific tool must grip the head before you can use the bolt. Commonly, wrenches and screws are used to tighten and loosen the bolt because when it is placed around the head, it provides grip. Regarding different styles, naturally, hex, slotted hex, and socket cap kinds of head styles are available for bolts. These styles offer the best surface area where another tool can get the best grip.


  1. Shank

Shank refers to the non-threaded part of the bolt just below the head, which looks smooth. The whole point of this smooth surface is to prevent any unnecessary movement of the workpieces and components that are joined together. Shank helps the bolt to maintain stability when there is a lot of vibration and direction of the joint parts. It keeps the components intact, and no pulse can push the bolt back out of the equipment or workpiece.


  1. Grip length 

The grip length specifies the thickness of the joining parts to be combined using the bolt. This part of the bolt helps assemble components of different sizes and thicknesses. The grip length should always be equal to the thickness of any of the components attached with the bolt's help.


  1. Threading

A bolt can never sustain without threading. Threading is the crucial feature of a bolt that allows it to be put into or moved out of work components. There are different types of bolts and everyone has its own type of threading. Many might have a small threaded area, and others might have a large one. Threading is found on the bottom-most part of a bolt. This connects with the internal threading of a work component to move in and out of that particular component.
